State of Mind

I've been sick the last couple of days, which has lead me to conduct some very interesting internet searches (when not counting sheep) and I recalled that now that I live in Virginia, I should look into having a "Virginia" state of mind...Done and done.

This got me thinking about California and New York, my recent homes. You'll never guess what New York's slogan is... California's slogan on the other hand is:Apparently, no one's ever heard of California's slogan (I certainly hadn't). I guess it makes sense, no need to advertise for a place where people actually go! :)

While I do NY, I'd like to swap California and NY's slogan's- from personal experience. And long live Virginia! I love love love it here. DC is nice too. You'll get a kick out of their slogan:Taxation without representation. It's on all the license plates!

TV consumption

Nielsen Media just released some interesting statistics in their annual Three Screens report, including the fact that average television consumption has increased to nearly 35 hours per week per person. And the older you are, the more television you're likely to watch. That's FIVE HOURS of television per day. That can't be good for your brain!

DC Shoes.

Since moving to DC, I have worn several different pairs of shoes.

I moved here in my faux-Uggs. Comfy, familiar, low-maintenance... all in all a good shoe to settle into a new place.
Within a couple weeks though, it became quite clear that I needed a shoe that could get me through a snow storm! Knee high rubber boots were just the ticket.
Before I knew it, I was donning a sturdy pair of work boots. Work boots are perfect, they protect your feet and get you through the mud. But... they're also rigid, and you can't really do anything else with them (except track mud into the house).
Luckily, March brought me a reason to cowboy up! These have by far been my most exciting pair of shoes since living in DC. They've taken me dancing and brought joy to my country loving soul!
But oh the weather has been a changing... Recently I've been sporting a pair of flip flips. Not just any old pair, but a cool pair of brown leather rainbows. They hug my summer toes and make me feel free! Thank you for finally arriving, Spring time!
It is my impression that all anyone really needs is a good pair of shoes.

This post is dedicated to my roommate. Erin, this shoe's for you!

Unmarked Black SUV's with Tinted Windows

When I got to work today, there were several black SUV's parked in front (usually denoting high profile characters, like the president) but I didn't think anything of it, just assumed it was a foreign dignitary that I'd never heard of... only to find out later that it was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton! Living in DC is pretty fun. I walk through this courtyard everyday!

Walking the Dog

We took our neighbor's dog Frisbee on a walk today where I discovered that dogs really do like fire hydrants!

Foreign Film Night

Last night a group of us got together and watched "Together"- it was pretty good, and if you like violin and classical music, you will really like this film. It's about a boy who is a violin prodigy whose father is a peasant, and the father does everything he can to ensure the boy has the best future possible. There are a couple wacky characters (the film takes place present day) and there are some funny parts and touching parts. Overall, it was enjoyable.

Photos of the Day

This is not photoshopped. The Bald Eagle closes in on the Starling, who doesn't have a clue what's about to happen.Squashed in the claws of death! Poor little Starling! Eagles are so beautiful.

The Hurt Locker

I saw this movie tonight, and would like to discuss. *semi-spoiler alert*
#1 what does "The Hurt Locker" even mean? The movie ended, and I still didn't know! ... I looked it up- apparently it's a saying for being injured in an explosion- or being sent to a place of ultimate pain. Weird.
#2 A couple times the music bugged me
#3 loved all the cameo's
#4 cinematography was WELL DONE. Very pretty.
#5 Why do I always see war movies? They make me feel uncomfortable.
#6 Do guys really like punching each other for fun?
#7 I think I missed an important scene because at one point two guys have a strange contrived conversation in a car.
#8 I really liked the blond character that wasn't James (whose name I can't remember)
#9 Junior mints improve every movie experience.
#10 I don't think this movie should have won so many awards... I couldn't tell when we reached the middle or any sort of climax in the story... the transition point was more of an anti-climax. So in that respect, the story was not great for me. But I do have to say the acting was really good all around, and it looked really good. And there were several riveting scenes- cohesively though it only landed on the good side of okay for me. (which could possibly be attributed to hype... after all, I was expecting it to be better than Avatar!)

#2 - "Your family is young, gifted, and attractive."

#1 - RECEIVED!

#2 - It's good to be reminded! ;)

New York for the weekend!

I drove up to NYC for the weekend to visit Brenda for her birthday! It was raining like crazy the entire time! We were passing so many people whose umbrellas were flipping, we tried to get a pic, but it was hard through the rain! Here I am driving the streets of New York... driving is so much more fun than walking! Parking is another story... I love Brenda's expression in this next pic... shows full confidence in my ability to drive in the rain and take a picture of her with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background! I've got mad skills, I know...
Ash Pro and Brenda both had birthdays this week, so we celebrated by brunching at the Clinton Street Bakery! It was so fun to catch up with both of them. And the pancakes were delicious!
We had so much fun spending the afternoon with Emily and Kyle! Definitely two of my favorite people.
We played Ticket To Ride, the super fun board game. I got last place :P

We made sure to pack my 36 hours with as much fun as possible! I got to see Kimmie Jones...The fabulous April!
And the handsome Colin! We wrapped up the night up with a cut throat game of SCUM! I beat Colin, every hand. :) He hates to lose even more than I love to win (which makes it SO much more fun to win...)
Thanks for the fabulous weekend Brenda! Happy Birthday!!!

I saw this pic on Facebook, it totally cracks me up. If I had a cat, this is what it would look like... (shout out to Deedee and Lucky, my surrogate weekend kitties!)
